Is Your Website Working for You? A Web Designer’s Perspective on Common Website Issues
As more people find my services, I’m increasingly asked to review websites. These requests come from business owners and professionals who are either curious about how their site looks to an expert or concerned about poor traffic and declining engagement.
I review both professionally built and self-built websites, and while some are beautifully designed, they often miss key ingredients for success. Here are some of the most common issues I encounter:
1. Unclear or Weak Sales Messaging
A visually stunning website can still fail if it doesn’t communicate its purpose effectively. I often see sites where the messaging is either too vague or doesn’t clearly guide visitors towards an action. A website should answer three key questions within seconds: Who are you? What do you offer? Why should the visitor care?
2. Lack of Calls to Action (CTAs)
Many websites, particularly self-built ones, lack clear CTAs. Visitors need direction—whether it’s to book a call, sign up for a newsletter, or make a purchase. Without strong CTAs, potential customers may leave without taking action.
3. Target Audience Misalignment
Your website should be designed with your ideal customer in mind. I often find sites that fail to speak to their audience’s needs, using either too much industry jargon or a tone that doesn’t resonate with their target market.
4. Poor Layout and User Experience (UX)
A confusing layout, difficult navigation, or slow loading times can drive visitors away. Websites should have a logical flow that guides users smoothly from one section to another. Simplicity and ease of use always win over clutter and complexity.
5. SEO Issues
Some sites have little to no SEO, making them nearly invisible on search engines. Missing title tags, poor keyword usage, lack of alt text on images, and slow page speeds are common issues that prevent sites from ranking well.
6. Broken Links and Missing Pages
A broken link not only creates frustration for users but also affects search engine rankings. I regularly come across pages that lead nowhere or internal links that no longer work, signaling neglect.
7. Lack of Mobile Optimisation
More than half of web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your website isn’t mobile-friendly—meaning it doesn’t adjust well to different screen sizes—you’re losing a significant portion of potential visitors.
8. Outdated Design and Content
A website that looks outdated or has old, irrelevant content can make visitors question a business’s credibility. Keeping content fresh and ensuring design stays modern helps build trust and engagement.
9. Analytics and Tracking Missing
Without website analytics, businesses are flying blind. Many sites I review don’t track visitor behaviour, meaning the owner has no insight into what’s working and what’s not.
Final Thoughts
Your website is often the first impression potential customers have of your business. If it’s not clear, engaging, and user-friendly, you could be losing opportunities. If you’re unsure whether your website is working for you, it might be time for a review.
