Why I Revisited My Business Plan (18 Months In)
When I first launched Smallsky Creative, I had a decent idea of what I wanted to do, how I wanted to work, and who I wanted to work with. I’d left the corporate world, set up my limited company, and got stuck in. Like many small business owners, I created a basic business plan early on—but if I’m honest, I didn’t revisit it.
Fast forward 18 months. I’ve worked with some brilliant clients, tackled a variety of projects, and learned a huge amount—not just about websites, but about myself, the kind of work I enjoy, and the kind of business I want to run.
Time to revisit the original plan
It was around this point I realised I needed to take a step back.
Not because anything was going wrong, but because things had shifted. My services had evolved. My understanding of the market was sharper. And some of my early assumptions no longer felt quite right.
So, I revisited my business plan. Here's why it helped:
- I’d lost sight of the original purpose.
Day-to-day work is absorbing—it’s easy to drift away from your bigger picture. Reading my old notes helped me remember why I started and what mattered most to me.
- I understood my clients much better now.
I’d had 18 months of conversations, feedback, and trial and error. That experience meant I could now write a plan based on reality—not just good intentions.
- I needed to refocus.
Not a pivot, but a clear-up. A chance to refine my services, update my pricing strategy, and reframe the way I talk about what I do.
- It gave me space to look forward.
We all talk about working on the business, not just in it—but this was one of the rare times I actually did it.
The best part? It wasn’t hard.
Once I gave myself permission to stop, reflect, and ask, “Is this still the direction I want to go?”, the rest came easily. I didn’t start from scratch—I just refined and realigned.
If you’re a year or two into running your business and things feel a bit fuzzy, I can highly recommend doing the same. Revisit your plan. It doesn’t have to be perfect or pretty. Just make sure it still fits you.
